Lane Love: Mountain Biking in Style via Chris Akrigg

May 29th, 2012

The story of stunt biker Chris Akrigg‘s crash (and subsequent 40-foot fall) that resulted in a shattered femur is all too well known in the biking community all around the world. But now — a year later — Chris is well again, and back at doing what he loves to do: mountain biking with some serious class and finesse.

His first video back is proof that Chris has been hard at work recovering from his injury. It’s also a visual work of art. So today, after a fine long holiday weekend, we encourage you to sit back, relax and enjoy.

Every Monday on Lane Love, we’ll be featuring bicycling news, stories and photos from around the world. Have a lane that you love? Send us a photo! You can post it to our Facebook page or upload to our Flickr group and we might just feature it here on Lane Love.

Lane Love: The Canine Bike Lock

April 30th, 2012

Who needs to carry around a heavy lock when you can simply employ your canine companion to watch your ride for you?

Apparently, that’s exactly how the owner of the dog in this video feels. Turns out man’s best friend can also be man’s best bike lock.

Ditch Your Car: Art on Wheels

April 11th, 2012

Ever felt inspired to do something artsy with your bike? You could add a small plant to its frame, or knit your own well-designed saddle bag or even get this, attach it, and call it your own kind of creativity. But if you want a real piece of frame art, you’d have to go to the pros, a group of Slovenian artists who are far more creative than any of us could ever hope to be.

This video showcases what the Orto Bike Project crew is capable of when it comes to painting, gluing, crocheting, stenciling and drawing onto bikes to make them utterly unique; watch and prepare to be amazed.

Bikelordz: Bike Culture in Accra, Ghana

August 17th, 2011

Thanks to Portland Design Works for tipping us off to this cool Kickstarter project last week:

Bikelordz is a short documentary about the self-taught, self-invented bicycle culture which young people in Accra, Ghana have created and passed on to their younger contemporaries over time. It follows crews of these young bicycle gurus as they try and use their skills to make money, gain recognition, and live on their own terms.

All images in Bikelordz were shot in Ghana and all of the music is Ghanaian. It focuses on a young BMX movement which thrives amid adverse circumstances which are particularly urban Ghanaian but undeniably universal.

Support the project here.

“Look for solutions, not problems.” -Dan Eldon.

And what’s that solution? One of them just happens to be bikes. Check out the trailer to With My Own Two Wheels, an inspiring film about just why bikes are having an impact in all kinds of communities around the world.

Would You Ride a Wooden Bike?

May 11th, 2011

While most of us might be interested in carbon frames, there are others out there who want something a little simpler. Enter the Splinter Bike, a bike made entirely out of wood, without a single piece of rubber or metal.

As if building an entirely wooden bike wasn’t enough, the team behind the Splinter Bike is attempting to set the Wooden Bike Land Speed Record — and by “set” we mean “create,” since such a feat has never been attempted before.

Pretty cool if you ask us.
