Much of the trail runs next to the rushing river, creating a unique juxtapostion between the water and dirt.
The McKenzie River Trail (the MRT) is situated in Central Oregon, on the west side of the Cascades. This mountain range, predominantly made up of dormant and not-so-dormant volcanoes, does an efficient job of stopping the moisture from the Pacific Coast. On the west side you have temperate rainforests and old growth timber, and a stones throw to the east you are exploring an arid desert-like landscape. The MRT, being on the west side of the volcanoes, features towering Douglas fir, mossy forest floors, a raging river (complete with big waterfalls) and a cool climate. Apparently it rains frequently, but it was nice and dry for our visit down this renowned trail.

We’re very fond of this entirely entertaining and in some cases sorely accurate poster, which we found via Loving the Bike‘s Facebook page. We love the idea of measuring the cycles of your life in terms of your bike fancy, so take a look at it and ask yourself: where are you in the Cycles of Life?
Every Wednesday on Ditch Your Car we’ll be bringing you just another reason to spend more time on two wheels. Be it a photo, a statistic or an inspirational video, we want to keep reminding you about why riding is great!

The story of stunt biker Chris Akrigg‘s crash (and subsequent 40-foot fall) that resulted in a shattered femur is all too well known in the biking community all around the world. But now — a year later — Chris is well again, and back at doing what he loves to do: mountain biking with some serious class and finesse.
His first video back is proof that Chris has been hard at work recovering from his injury. It’s also a visual work of art. So today, after a fine long holiday weekend, we encourage you to sit back, relax and enjoy.
Every Monday on Lane Love, we’ll be featuring bicycling news, stories and photos from around the world. Have a lane that you love? Send us a photo! You can post it to our Facebook page or upload to our Flickr group and we might just feature it here on Lane Love.

According to the League of American Bicyclists, brand new data released by their organization, as well as Sierra Club and National Council of La Raza (NCLR), showcases the many economic benefits of cycling in the United States. It opens with a strong statement referencing the lack of government funding for adequate bicycling projects, stating that “… though biking and walking account for 12 percent of all trips in the U.S., these transportation modes receive only 1.6 percent of federal transportation spending—far less than their fair share.”

If you’re like us, your bike is precious property. Naturally, you lock it up accordingly wherever you go, and always feel thankful when you and your ride make it home safely. Head buzzing from wine, stomach full of cheese, meat and bread, I careened haphazardly down the mountain, the Rhone Valley far below and a group of howling bike riders in the exact same boat as I following closely behind.
We were mid-way through an eight-day sampling of some of the finest Swiss and French downhill mountain bike gems. Some days took us to established bike parks, and other days to obscure trails hidden to the general public, and only discovered through a combination of bribing locals, studying maps and some good ‘ol fashioned luck.

Waiting At The Start Line During Sea Otter
I am 11-year-old Jake Yackle and I live in Cortez, CO. For four years I’ve been XC Mountain Bike racing in the Four Corners States and for the past two seasons I’ve stepped up to race teenagers and adults in competition. My brother, Nye, and I traveled to the Sea Otter Classic last month to race against nationally ranked 13-14 year-old juniors that are closer to our age.
Before our XC race, each of the three consecutive days, we completed pre-rides on the dry, hot 14.5 mile Sea Otter course. The Osprey Verve 4′s ample water capacity and innovative lightweight design proved perfect to help keep us fresh and energetic for our second most important race of the season.

When people think of Europe, many of them think of this. And it’s true that in certain cities, such as Utrecht in the Netherlands, more than a quarter of all trips are made by bike. But this film — Brussels Express — shows the other side of European bicycle commuting, and it’s not all that pretty.

There are many creative ways that Bike Month has been promoted this May, from the newly instituted Bike to School Day to 30 Days of Biking and more, but this crafty video, “The Convert” is one of our favorites so far.
Created for Jacksonville’s Bike Month, “The Convert” takes a film noir approach to cycling — and keeps you watching and wondering the whole way through. Take six minutes out of your day to check it out see where it takes you!

Osprey Crew Enjoying Bike Expo NY
The Osprey marketing crew journeyed East to Manhattan earlier this month to participate in the 1st Annual Bike Expo NY. Bike Expo New York gave residents and visitors an unprecedented look at urban cycling against the backdrop of New York. Presented by Eastern Mountain Sports, BE NY featured vendors, live-performances, hands-on programming, bike gear giveaways, a bicycle fashion show, outdoor spin sessions and of course, free bicycle classes for both youth and adults.
The expo was a tremendous success with more than 43,000 visitors through the doors over the course of three days. Approximately 32,000 of these visitors participated in the Five Boro Bike Tour which is America’s largest cycling event. The event provided participants the unique and fun experience to bike through all five boroughs — a 40 mile, traffic-free ride for 32,000 cyclists. Proceeds from the registration fees are used to support a huge number of charities and non-profit organizations.
