Created for Jacksonville’s Bike Month, “The Convert” takes a film noir approach to cycling — and keeps you watching and wondering the whole way through. Take six minutes out of your day to check it out see where it takes you!

Every Wednesday on Ditch Your Car we’ll be bringing you just another reason to spend more time on two wheels. Be it a photo, a statistic or an inspirational video, we want to keep reminding you about why riding is great!

Ditch Your Car: Bike to School Day

May 2nd, 2012

We’re all well aware it’s National Bike Month, but did you realize May 9th marks the first inaugural Bike to School Day for children of all ages?

Together, the National Center for Safe Routes to School and the League of American Bicyclists have created a day that encourages America’s youth to find a safe way to commute to school via bike (or on foot, as well). Of course, the ultimate goal is to educate students about safe bike routes to school so they may choose to commute via two wheels more frequently throughout the entire school year.

According to Momentum Magazine, “The long term goal of this event is to get more and more students to choose biking and walking over a car or bus ride. Safe Routes to School benefits not only the kids through safety and educational programs, but entire neighborhoods by building sidewalks or creating bicycle paths. Communities get an entire face-lift,” said Jess Mathews, coordinator with Safe Routes to School.

Through the Bike to School Event, Matthews hopes to raise awareness of the potential barriers that stand in the way of kids’ abilities to commute to school — and to help create change so that future generations can safely commute on any given day.

Schools can go here to register for the event and get planning and promotion tips to help spread the word about cycling for change!

Ditch Your Car: Enjoy CicLAvia

April 25th, 2012

A good time-lapse video may be just what you need to get over the mid-week hump. Or maybe it’s the collective 12,000 images of people riding their bikes compressed into just 1 minute and 50 seconds that will get your blood pumping. To us, this video is worth watching for the simple fact that it represents one simple act: people joyously cycling on a warm, beautiful day.

For a little more background on why we see people riding through the seemingly car-less streets of L.A. in this video, here’s the scoop. The above images were taken during a CicLAvia day on April 15th, 2012. CicLAvia is a temporary closure of streets in L.A. to cars, during which pedestrians and cyclists alike can take to the streets of their own accord. Inspired by a weekly street closure event that began in Botoga, Colombia (ciclovía), CicLAvia prides itself on being able to do the following (via the CicLAvia site):

Connecting communities and giving people a break from the stress of car traffic. The health benefits are immense. Ciclovías bring families outside of their homes to enjoy the streets, our largest public space. In Los Angeles we need CicLAvia more than ever. Our streets are congested with traffic, our air is polluted with toxic fumes, our children suffer from obesity and other health conditions caused by the scarcity of public space and safe, healthy transportation options. CicLAvia creates a temporary park for free, simply by removing cars from city streets. It creates a network of connections between our neighborhoods and businesses and parks with corridors filled with fun. We can’t wait to see you at CicLAvia!

What’s more, we hope to see more CicLAvia-like events pop up in more cities across the U.S. The more we encourage communities to leave their cars parked and hop on their bikes, the better.

Ditch Your Car: Google Unveils its New Fleet of GBikes

April 18th, 2012

At its Mountain View Campus in California, Google offers a veritable fleet of on-campus bikes for its employees to use in getting from one building to the next. The concept was pioneered in 2008, when it first introduced its beach cruiser-like GBikes. Last fall, Google began an employee-wide competition, asking its people to create a design for the new GBike that would have just four design critera, according to this CNET article:

“The bike had to be easy to produce. It needed to be affordable. The bike had to be both comfortable and secure. And, in a nod to its culture, the bike had to be Googley, using novel components, structure, and appearance.”

“We’ve got an entrepreneurial and innovative culture,” said Brendon Harrington, Google’s transportation operations manager. “We said, ‘You tell us what you think is a cool design.’”

Ditch Your Car: Art on Wheels

April 11th, 2012

Ever felt inspired to do something artsy with your bike? You could add a small plant to its frame, or knit your own well-designed saddle bag or even get this, attach it, and call it your own kind of creativity. But if you want a real piece of frame art, you’d have to go to the pros, a group of Slovenian artists who are far more creative than any of us could ever hope to be.

This video showcases what the Orto Bike Project crew is capable of when it comes to painting, gluing, crocheting, stenciling and drawing onto bikes to make them utterly unique; watch and prepare to be amazed.

Ditch Your Car: Store Your Bike for All To See

April 4th, 2012

Bikes are most often seen traveling or resting on the ground — but what’s the harm in switching up what you’re used to every once in a while? In fact, why not decorate your home with the beauty of a bicycle like architect David Baker did in the case of his living room?

Naturally, we advocate for the act of bicycling itself, but there’s definitely something to be said for the aesthetics bikes have to offer in almost any environment. For the sake of practicality, it can be a great space-saver to craft a way to hang your bike in your home (just make sure it’s practical and within reach, not just for aesthetics’ sake). After all, what better way is there to showcase your ride when you’re not on the road than by having it integrated into your home?

Ditch Your Car: This Bike Packs a Laptop Storage Compartment in its Frame

March 14th, 2012

If you can get over the looks of the bike (pictured above), which in all its oddness evokes images of über dorky segues, you just might agree with us when we say it’s an exciting bicycle engineering feat. Exaggerations aside, this prototype was developed by French carmaker Peugeot to be an urban ride that’s equipped for carrying a laptop (or even a small laptop backpack) in its very own frame.

The Path Less Pedaled: What Is Bicycle Travel?

March 7th, 2012

Photo: Russ Roca, The Path Less Pedaled

Three years ago, Russ Roca and Laura Crawford left their home in Long Beach, California, on what would turn out to be a fateful bike trip to Joshua Tree. By the time they returned, began plans to sell everything they owned to take off on an incredible adventure — on two wheels.

Instead of investing in a corporate job, a mortgage, a retirement plan, we decided to invest in ourselves. We took the value off of our stuff and put it on the opportunity to live deeply, to follow our dreams, to create everyday adventures. We stopped wondering about the rest of the world, and went out to experience it.

Now after three years and thousands of miles traveled, Russ and Laura are settling down for now in the bike mecca of Portland, Oregon to better share their story of the path less pedaled

After 4,000 loaded touring miles on our Bromptons, we also want to share all that we’ve learned about adventure travel on these sturdy little bikes… we’ve taken some time to think about why bicycle travel is such an incredible way of exploring a place and why someone should consider it. What is bicycle travel? Watch and see.
