Lane Love: A Pop Up Green Street in Cleveland, Pop Up Rockwell

June 4th, 2012

When most cities consider a change in the infrastructure of their transportation system, the typical modus operandi is for city officials to sit indoors and look at drawings and written proposals. But what if city street improvements could be brought into the real world — into all three dimensions so that people could not only consider, but actually see, the changes that may or may not take place?

The city of Cleveland, Ohio is experimenting with this more “live” concept of proposed downtown street improvements in a project the city is pioneering called Pop Up Rockwell. Here’s the lowdown, via the masterminds behind it all, Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC):

POP UP ROCKWELL is a one-week experiment to test “complete & green street” improvements on downtown Cleveland’s Rockwell Avenue (between W. Roadway and E. 6th Street), which took place during April 21 to 27, 2012. The temporary street transformation explores fresh ideas for making the street more pedestrian and bicyclist friendly. Going beyond two-dimensional drawings used in typical public meetings, Pop Up Rockwell allows people to physically experience a future vision of the city in three dimensions, in a real environment, and provide feedback before large financial and political investments are made.

The temporary installations included “Cleveland’s first cycle track, stormwater bio-filtration benches, enhanced transit waiting areas and wind animated public art” for city residents to experience — and potentially put into real-life practice in the future. According to CUDC, Pop Up Rockwell was pioneered as a response to the community’s desire to see real life action in between the formal and often slow-moving stages of planning and actual implementation. As CUDC puts it, “Lessons learned from the short-term project may influence permanent changes, which support the City of Cleveland’s Complete & Green Streets Ordinance and Group Plan Commission recommendations.”

With all of this we feel compelled to ask: Should more cities implement temporary pop up street improvements so citizens can experience them and potentially choose to have a voice in regard to the real-life changes that may or may not take place? Would you be excited to see a pop up street in your city?

Every Monday on Lane Love, we’ll be featuring bicycling news, stories and photos from around the world. Have a lane that you love? Send us a photo! You can post it to our Facebook page or upload to our Flickr group and we might just feature it here on Lane Love.

43,000+ Attend Bike Expo NY

May 10th, 2012

Osprey Crew Enjoying Bike Expo NY

The Osprey marketing crew journeyed East to Manhattan earlier this month to participate in the 1st Annual Bike Expo NY.  Bike Expo New York gave residents and visitors an unprecedented look at urban cycling against the backdrop of New York.  Presented by Eastern Mountain Sports, BE NY featured vendors, live-performances, hands-on programming, bike gear giveaways, a bicycle fashion show, outdoor spin sessions and of course, free bicycle classes for both youth and adults.

The expo was a tremendous success with more than 43,000 visitors through the doors over the course of three days.  Approximately 32,000 of these visitors participated in the Five Boro Bike Tour which is America’s largest cycling event.  The event provided participants the unique and fun experience to bike through all five boroughs — a 40 mile, traffic-free ride for 32,000 cyclists.  Proceeds from the registration fees are used to support a huge number of charities and non-profit organizations.

Ditch Your Car: Bike to School Day

May 2nd, 2012

We’re all well aware it’s National Bike Month, but did you realize May 9th marks the first inaugural Bike to School Day for children of all ages?

Together, the National Center for Safe Routes to School and the League of American Bicyclists have created a day that encourages America’s youth to find a safe way to commute to school via bike (or on foot, as well). Of course, the ultimate goal is to educate students about safe bike routes to school so they may choose to commute via two wheels more frequently throughout the entire school year.

According to Momentum Magazine, “The long term goal of this event is to get more and more students to choose biking and walking over a car or bus ride. Safe Routes to School benefits not only the kids through safety and educational programs, but entire neighborhoods by building sidewalks or creating bicycle paths. Communities get an entire face-lift,” said Jess Mathews, coordinator with Safe Routes to School.

Through the Bike to School Event, Matthews hopes to raise awareness of the potential barriers that stand in the way of kids’ abilities to commute to school — and to help create change so that future generations can safely commute on any given day.

Schools can go here to register for the event and get planning and promotion tips to help spread the word about cycling for change!

Fantastic Fruita Fat Tire Festival

May 2nd, 2012

Pre-ride at the Kokopelli Trails

Osprey Packs flew the flag over the weekend at the Fruita Fat Tire Festival in Fruita, Colorado. After a difficult start on Thursday evening when a brief storm blew through with winds approaching 80 mph, the remainder of the weekend brought perfect mountain biking weather and a fantastic festival. Thanks to all who participated in the Osprey festivities which included, Rippin Chix MTB skills clinics, Osprey hydration pack demos, a heated Fix-A-Flat competition, plentiful schwag giveaways and special deals through local Osprey retailers.

Fruita pulled out all of the stops with live music in the park, a New Belgium beer tent, a great selection of bicycles to test out, pancake breakfast and other exciting activities. Between Fruita and Grand Junction there are so many amazing single track trails that a weekend was not near enough time to explore all the opportunities. We look forward to coming back next year.

Ditch Your Car: Enjoy CicLAvia

April 25th, 2012

A good time-lapse video may be just what you need to get over the mid-week hump. Or maybe it’s the collective 12,000 images of people riding their bikes compressed into just 1 minute and 50 seconds that will get your blood pumping. To us, this video is worth watching for the simple fact that it represents one simple act: people joyously cycling on a warm, beautiful day.

For a little more background on why we see people riding through the seemingly car-less streets of L.A. in this video, here’s the scoop. The above images were taken during a CicLAvia day on April 15th, 2012. CicLAvia is a temporary closure of streets in L.A. to cars, during which pedestrians and cyclists alike can take to the streets of their own accord. Inspired by a weekly street closure event that began in Botoga, Colombia (ciclovía), CicLAvia prides itself on being able to do the following (via the CicLAvia site):

Connecting communities and giving people a break from the stress of car traffic. The health benefits are immense. Ciclovías bring families outside of their homes to enjoy the streets, our largest public space. In Los Angeles we need CicLAvia more than ever. Our streets are congested with traffic, our air is polluted with toxic fumes, our children suffer from obesity and other health conditions caused by the scarcity of public space and safe, healthy transportation options. CicLAvia creates a temporary park for free, simply by removing cars from city streets. It creates a network of connections between our neighborhoods and businesses and parks with corridors filled with fun. We can’t wait to see you at CicLAvia!

What’s more, we hope to see more CicLAvia-like events pop up in more cities across the U.S. The more we encourage communities to leave their cars parked and hop on their bikes, the better.

Every Wednesday on Ditch Your Car we’ll be bringing you just another reason to spend more time on two wheels. Be it a photo, a statistic or an inspirational video, we want to keep reminding you about why riding is great!

Cyclists Show Up In Force for the Southeast Bike Expo

March 2nd, 2012

Ready to open at the Southeast Bike Expo

More than 1,000 cyclists showed up to demo the wares of 40+ vendors at the inaugural Southeast Bike Expo.  Things looked dicey during setup on Friday as heavy rains, high winds and tornado warnings threatened to put a serious damper on the weekends festivities. Fortunately, the rains subsided and the winds let down a bit for Saturday’s opening with conditions improving throughout the day leading into a beautiful Sunday. Much hard work and preparation went into making this a world class event and the dividends paid off as participants were all smiles both days.

Endurance Racing: A Love-Hate Relationship

February 22nd, 2012

Ready to roll at 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo

It is 3:45 a.m. on a Sunday morning and the temperature has dropped into the 30s. The sweat pouring out of me would freeze to my helmet strap if I wasn’t giving off heat like a glass blower’s furnace. I have been pedaling way over my lactic threshold for the past 20 minutes riding like a scared rabbit being chased by a pack of angry coyotes. Our team is fighting hard to maintain that 3rd place position on the podium.

While thoughts should be focused on how to reel in the team in front of us, the doubt is creeping in… can I hang on? How much more will my legs take? Where is that big rut that almost killed me on the last lap? This is lap number 14 at the 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo bike race and I am fighting hard for my four-person single speed team.
